Postcards of Japan (POJ) aims to be a central repository for information on vintage postcards of Japan and the Japanese. Our focus is the pre-war period.

Sakaeya Shoten (also Sakaeya) was founded in May 1893 (Meiji 26) as a shop selling ryumon stamps by Kotaro Imaki, who hailed from Toyoura-gun in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was located on Motomachi-douri 3 chome in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture.

The Grand Hotel opened on August 16, 1873 (Meiji 6) and was soon considered the height of Western culture and elegance in Japan. It was located on the Bund and overlooked Yokohama Bay.
