The Grand Hotel opened on August 16, 1873 (Meiji 6) and was soon considered the height of Western culture and elegance in Japan. It was located on the Bund and overlooked Yokohama Bay.

Steve Sundberg is a St. Paul, Minnesota-based freelance web designer, a long-time radio announcer, and an avid collector of vintage Japanese postcards. We talked recently about his wonderful collection.

On December 22, in a single day, two vintage Japanese postcards sold at over 250 dollars each. One card on eBay, the other on Yahoo! Japan’s auction site.

Vintage Japanese postcards give a wonderful view of what Japan and the Japanese used to look like about a hundred years ago. But dating them is still more an art than a science.
